At SENA Jewels, materials are chosen with intention — for their beauty, longevity, and how they feel against the skin. Comfort, wearability, and thoughtful design are just as important to us as aesthetic appeal. Below is a guide to the materials and finishes used across our collections, along with the stones we work with.
As with all jewellery made using natural materials, variations in colour, texture, and pattern are part of what makes each piece unique.
Earring Posts & Hooks
Hypoallergenic Surgical Steel Stud Posts
All of our stud earrings are designed with comfort and sensitivity in mind. We use hypoallergenic surgical steel posts, making them an excellent choice for those with sensitive ears.
Surgical steel is:
- Non-reactive and corrosion-resistant
- Highly unlikely to cause irritation or allergic reactions
- Durable enough for regular wear
This ensures you can enjoy your jewellery with confidence and ease, even for extended periods.
Nickel-Free & Lead-Free Steel Fish Hooks
For our drop and dangle earrings, we use 100% nickel-free and lead-free steel fish hooks.
Nickel and lead are two of the most common causes of skin irritation and allergic reactions. By eliminating both, we prioritise:
- Comfort
- Skin safety
- Everyday wearability
These hooks are lightweight, secure, and designed for effortless wear.
Metals & Finishes
Gold Plated
Many of our pieces feature gold plating, created by depositing a layer of gold over a base metal.
We use thicker gold plating than standard to ensure durability and a longer-lasting finish at an accessible price point. With regular wear, gold plating will naturally soften over time, particularly if exposed to water, sweat, lotions, sunscreen, or chemicals.
To extend the life of gold-plated pieces, we recommend:
- Removing jewellery before swimming or showering
- Avoiding direct contact with perfumes and skincare
- Storing pieces individually when not in use
Please refer to our Care Guide for further details.
Gold Vermeil
Gold vermeil is a premium finish that offers the look and feel of solid gold with added durability.
Gold vermeil consists of:
- A sterling silver base
- A thick layer of gold bonded over the surface
This results in a refined, long-lasting finish that is:
- More durable than standard gold plating
- Suitable for sensitive skin
- Ideal for everyday wear with proper care
Gold Filled
Gold-filled jewellery is crafted using a meticulous bonding process where a thick layer of solid gold is pressure-bonded to a core base metal.
Unlike gold plating, gold-filled jewellery contains a significant amount of real gold, making it:
- Highly durable
- Resistant to tarnishing
- Suitable for daily wear
Gold-filled pieces are also known for being skin-friendly, with most people experiencing little to no irritation. This makes them a beautiful and practical option for those seeking longevity without compromising on design.
PVD Coating
Some pieces feature PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) coating, an advanced finishing technique widely used in premium jewellery and watchmaking.
PVD coating offers:
- Exceptional durability
- Resistance to scratching and fading
- A finish that lasts significantly longer than traditional plating
This makes it an ideal choice for pieces designed to be worn frequently.
Natural & Semi-Precious Stones
We work with a curated selection of semi-precious stones, each naturally occurring and unique in character. While these stones may not carry the rarity or value of diamonds or emeralds, they are widely admired for their symbolism, energy, and organic beauty.
Natural variations in colour, veining, and texture are to be expected and celebrated.
